Who are Applegate Directory Ltd?
Applegate was formed in 1996 to bring Internet services to industrial companies. The founders had held senior management positions in industry including directorships in several subsidiaries of a FTSE 100 company. They saw the opportunity that the Internet brought to promote UK business to the world. They formed Applegate Directory Ltd and the first business directory was launched in 1996.
Applegate now employ ninety full time staff working from modern offices in the town of Barnstaple in North Devon. Being based in Devon means a better quality of life and reduced stress for our staff. It gives a lower cost base so therefore better value to you, the client. Everybody benefits! What is the Applegate Directory?
The Applegate Directory is a listing of major companies in the UK. It covers all areas of industry, technology and manufacturing. Its objective is to help bring buyers and specifiers to the right supplier quickly - a sort of marriage broker between companies. The directory works on the 'Yellow Pages' model, where every company gets a free basic listing. However, if you really want to promote your company then there are special subscription packages for you to make their information stand out from their competitors.
I have my own Internet site. Why do I need The Applegate Directory?
As the Internet grows, it becomes increasingly more difficult to get your own Internet site found. Search Engines are over-worked and becoming less effective. The solution for the future lies in building specialised communities for industry sectors. These are sometimes referred to as Portals. The Applegate Directory is the largest portal in selected market sectors for the UK. Because the site is large - nearly a million pages - it is readily found by the Search Engines. Buyers, Engineers and Specifiers use it as a main source when looking to source new products and services. It reaches people in ways that your own Internet site in isolation can never achieve. With over 80 Million Page Impressions each year, it is one of the UK's busiest business sites.

There are many Internet directories. Why should I choose Applegate?
Just like a printed directory, circulation is everything. It is important that the maximum number of relevant people use the directory. Applegate openly publish their circulation figures at Site Statistics. We believe that they show our directory to have the largest circulation in the Industry and Technology sector - by a Devon country mile.
The Applegate Directory has had it's site statistics audited by ABCE since May 2004. We believe that we are the only internet directory to claim this.
Ask other directories to prove their circulation to you. Take care that they are being honest in talking Page Impressions, Page Views or Complete Page Downloads and not Hits. See our Technical Terms for more details.

If I advertise with you, how many new visits will I get to my site?
The number of visits you will receive is proportional to the number of product sections you are listed under in the directory. The more sections you are in, then the more visits you will get to your internet site. The product sections must, of course, be relevant to your business. We offer a range of packages which give you listings under a different number of product headings. For instance, our Gold package lists you in up to 100 different product sections.
I understand that I can now edit my entry, how do I do this and how often can I change the information?
Applegate now offer you the opportunity to be controller of your company's advertising! This means that you can change almost anything whenever you like simply by logging on to Applegate and following our simple step-by-step instructions. Of course, we still provide the same excellent level of service and care that you are used to and as before, you will have an account manager to look after you every step of the way.

We hope that we've made it easy for you to become controller of your company on the Applegate directory, simply follow the steps below. However, if you do run into difficulty please call 01271 852000 and we will be happy to help you.
- Does your company have a listing? If yes, please use our search facility to find the entry, click the 'is this your company?' link and follow the instructions.
- Not sure if your company has a listing? Click the Register option at the top of the left-hand navigation bar and complete the form.
After submitting your details you will receive an email confirmation. This is NOT accepting you as controller, it is merely to let you know that we have your information which will then be verified by a telephone call from one of our account managers. We have to make this call and speak to whoever has nominated themselves to be the controller. It is the best way to confirm that it is a legitimate request and to introduce ourselves to you. If we cannot do this then we cannot accept the details.
Once you have been accepted as a controller then you are free to edit the listing at any time. This facility is available to all Applegate clients regardless of whether they have an enhanced listing or not.
What sort of pictures can I use for my company page?
All types of pictures are used. It can be your company logo, a photograph of your company offices or a product picture. The important thing is to make an immediate and memorable impact when someone views your entry.
What format do you accept pictures in?
You should be able to upload any TIFF, JPEG or GIF format images. They should be a maximum of 180 x 180 pixels and less than 5 KB but there is software on the Applegate controller screens that will resize the image for you if required. Everything that is submitted through the controller screens is validated by one of our Client Support team and your account manager is notified so that they can check the advert and, if necessary, contact you.

How do I advertise with Applegate and how much does it cost
Advertising with Applegate couldn't be easier.
We have a variety of packages starting with our most popular Silver at £295pa and the Gold at £425pa. There are discounts available if you would like to promote your business in more than one directory - perhaps in the Electronics and the Engineering sections plus a range of other online marketing tools to be used in conjunction with the basics. If you want more than a basic listing but are unsure about committing for a whole year then Applegate now offer a Shopping Cart facility. This allows you to advertise with Applegate on a month-by-month basis with the opportunity to cancel at any time (we do recommend that you consider at least 3 months to fully benefit from your investment). When you sign up for the shopping cart your details will be alloted to one of our account managers who will look after you. Your account manager is there to help and answer any questions that you may have, not only about the shopping cart but about advertising with Applegate in general.
Suppose I do not like my paid for entry after it is published?
If you do not like the way your paid entry appears on the page, then simply log in through your controller screens and edit it until you are satisfied. If you experience any problems when doing this then please contact your account manager. They will endeavour to sort things out for you asap as we want your entry to work effectively for you and will do our best to ensure your complete satisfaction.
How do I make changes to my entry?
The easiest way is to register as the controller of your company's advertising which will then allow you to edit the listing. It is very simple to become controller, simply follow the steps below.

When will my entry appear in the directory?
Individual company pages will usually update within a couple of hours, at the latest, overnight. Everything submitted/requested via the controller screens has to be validated by a member of our client support team to ensure that the high standards of the Applegate Directory are not compromised. Your account manager is notified every time you access your listing through the controller screens and again when client support validate the data so they are able to answer any questions that may arise.
NOTE: The only exception to this is if you want us to create something especially for you such as a bespoke flash image. Under those circumstances your account manager will liaise closely with you so that you are aware of the time frame.
I am not based in the UK. Can I advertise in the directory?
Yes, you are welcome to advertise with us. It is an ideal way of reaching companies in the UK market. Unfortunately, we cannot accept you for the basic free entry, but by subscribing to one of our advertising packages, you are welcome to be included. More details are on our Advertise with Us section.
I am still not certain. How can I learn more?
If you would like to discuss your entry then either use the Contact form and ask for someone to call you, or call us direct on 01271 852000. No one will pressurise you to buy - Applegate succeeds on its merits, not on a hard sell.
