Pipe Fittings

Pipe fittings are often small-sized fixtures which connect straight pipe to tubing systems, especially when they may be of two different sizes or shapes. In general, they ensure the smooth conveyance of water through the building and regulate the flow. Plumbing fittings or fixtures come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes. One of the most common is valves which stop and regulate the flow of water. Gaskets are mechanical seals, usually ring-shaped, which seal flange joints. Couplings (both slip and regular), unions, barbs and nipples are all used to connect two lengths of pipes. Elbows and tees allow for a change of direction in the flow of water whilst crosses are installed at the centre of inlets and outlets. Reducers (usually concentric) are attached when there is a change in pipe size. Specialised fixtures of tees, flanges, elbows and fittings are also used in the water drainage system to ensure waste water flows smoothly out of the building into the drains. Pipe fittings are used primarily in buildings to ensure that water flow is unhindered, both into and out of the building. Some fittings would also be used in gardens for hose pipes and irrigation purposes.
