The lead acid battery has an ability to have high surge currents and has a large power-to-weight ratio – meaning that they are fairly light and compact. Because of their effectiveness, they are commonly used in the field of automotive whereby the lead acid battery provides a burst of high amplitude electrical current that energises the starter motor. Types of lead acid batteries include flooded, sealed, VRLA, AGM, and GEL. Because of their compactness and large power-to-weight ratio, lead acid batteries are commonly used in automotive starter motors. In fact, most of the world’s lead acid batteries are used in automobile starting, ignition and lighting.
