Hydraulic Pumps
Hydraulic pumps are the mechanical source of power used in hydraulic-driven systems. They must generate a flow with enough power to overcome the pressure induced by the load at the pump outlet. The vacuum at the outlet forces the liquid from the reservoir into the inlet line to the pump which delivers it to the outlet and from where it is forced into the system. There are a variety of hydraulic pumps. They can be either positive or non-positive displacement although the former are the most commonly used. Non-positive displacement pumps have a continuous flow and their output varies as the pressure varies such as centrifugal pumps. Positive displacement ones can be either fixed or variable and this depends on the function of the system. Hybrid gear pumps can be either with external or internal gears, gear ring or screw spindle. The hybrid vane versions are either single or double chamber whilst the piston types can have axial or radial pistons. Hydraulic pumps are essential components of any hydraulic-driven machinery or tools. Pumps are used both for mobile and fixed construction equipment as well as machine tools and industrial metal forming. For high pressure equipment, the radial piston is often chosen.

PUWER - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 - SI 1998/2306 (PUWER).
