Mechanical Clutches
Mechanical clutches are the simplest form of clutch actuation and usually considered the least expensive. They are powered either mechanically or by hand or by foot. One example of where the operator can manually actuate the clutch is in a vehicle. Types of mechanical clutches include Clutch/Disengagement Torque Limiter, Overrunning Clutch, Backstop Clutch and Freewheeling Clutch. Mechanical clutches rely on operator actuation to engage and also disengage the clutch via foot or hand operation. Because of this, mechanically operated clutches are used mainly in lightweight vehicles and smaller sized agricultural or industrial equipment such as wood chippers and hoists.
