Coded Welding
Coded welding involves the welder, or welding operators making production welds in accordance with a set of code requirements. The industry document that is produced describing all these procedures is called a welding procedure specification (WPS). Coded welding, often known as WPS welding, outlines accepted procedures, trusted welding techniques, as well as the agreed materials used in each technique. In order to be entrusted with WPS, the welder has to have undertaken a Welder Approval Test – think of it a little like learning to drive. Once this exam is passed, the welder is a coded welder, capable of code welding and interpreting welding codes. The course needed to obtain coded welder status is usually followed by those in the construction and manufacturing industries were the ability to decipher code leads to savings in time and cost.
