The Benefits of Vertical Racking for Maximising Warehouse Space
1 August 2023Unveiling the Concept of Vertical Racking
Vertical racking systems, as the name suggests, are storage structures designed to utilise vertical space efficiently. These systems offer a reliable solution for UK warehouses looking to store long, slender items like timber, pipes, and moulding. With vertical racking, inventory is stored upright, allowing for easy visibility, accessibility, and organisation.
Maximising Space with Vertical Racking
Space utilisation is a critical consideration for any warehouse. In the UK, where land is a premium resource, it’s particularly crucial. Vertical racking provides an innovative way to maximise warehouse space. By leveraging vertical space, these racking systems free up valuable floor area, giving you room for other vital operations or allowing you to store more inventory within the same footprint.
Consider a warehouse with a floor space of 500 square meters and a height of 8 meters. Traditional horizontal storage might allow you to use only a fraction of this volume. In contrast, a well-designed vertical racking system can utilise almost the entire 4000 cubic meters of space available, significantly increasing your storage capacity.
Improving Inventory Accessibility
Accessibility is another key advantage of vertical racking. Items stored vertically are easy to identify and reach, reducing the time taken to retrieve or add stock. This increased efficiency can significantly speed up your operations, from order picking to stock replenishment.
For example, in a traditional storage system, retrieving a specific length of pipe might require shifting other items to reach the one you need. With a vertical rack, you can access every item directly, without having to move any other stock.
Safeguarding Stock Integrity
Vertical racking helps protect your stock from damage. Storing items like timber, pipes, or moulding in traditional horizontal racks can lead to pressure damage or warping. Vertical racking eliminates this risk, keeping your stock in optimal condition and reducing wastage.
Enhancing Warehouse Safety
Warehouse safety is a significant concern for UK businesses. Vertical racking systems contribute to a safer work environment by ensuring secure storage and preventing stock from falling or being knocked over. The use of dividers within the racks can offer extra stability, ensuring each item is securely compartmentalised.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends vertical racking for the safe storage of long loads, reducing the risk of accidents caused by unstable or improperly stacked goods.
Facilitating Better Organisation
With vertical racking, keeping your warehouse organised is simple. This system lends itself to efficient categorisation of stock, making it easy to find and retrieve items when needed. For businesses with a diverse range of stock profiles, this organisational benefit is especially valuable.
Customisability of Vertical Racking Systems
Vertical racking systems are available in a variety of designs, allowing for bespoke solutions tailored to your warehouse’s specific needs. Whether you need to store long, slender items like pipes or wider goods like panels, a vertical racking system can be configured to suit. Adjustments to the height, width, and depth of the racking compartments enable a highly customised storage solution.
Vertical Racking: A Game-Changer for Space Optimisation
In essence, vertical racking systems offer UK businesses a host of benefits. By making efficient use of vertical space, they maximise storage capacity, improve inventory accessibility, and enhance safety standards. The ability to protect stock integrity and facilitate effective organisation makes these systems an invaluable asset for any warehouse dealing with long, slender items. With their customisable design, vertical racking systems provide a flexible, efficient, and space-optimising storage solution. The Advantages of Mezzanine Floors for UK Warehouses
1 August 2023Here at Dexion Anglia we are Mezzanine floor Suppliers for industrial and warehousing, if you are looking for custom designed Mezzanine floors or are unsure of what you need to make your space more usable, feel free to take a look at our Mezzanine floor services page and get in touch today! Click Here
Understanding Mezzanine Floors
Mezzanine floors are semi-permanent story structures typically installed within buildings, sitting between two permanent original stories. They are a versatile solution, extending upwards rather than outwards, capitalising on unused vertical space. Mezzanine floors offer an ingenious way to increase storage capacity, optimise warehouse functionality, and adapt to the evolving needs of UK businesses without the need for a costly relocation or building expansion.
The Versatility of Mezzanine Floors
Mezzanine floors provide exceptional flexibility. They can be tailored to a wide variety of applications, serving as additional storage space, office areas, production departments, or even retail spaces, depending on your specific needs.
Efficient Use of Space
One of the most significant benefits of mezzanine floors is their ability to maximise available space. By utilising the often-underused vertical space within a warehouse, they can effectively double or even triple the usable floor area. This additional space can be instrumental in improving your operational efficiency, whether it’s by increasing storage capacity, expanding production areas, or creating new office spaces.
For example, consider a warehouse with a ceiling height of 7 meters. Traditional single-level use might limit you to a maximum stack height of 3 meters, leaving a lot of wasted space. A mezzanine floor can be installed at around 4 meters, essentially doubling your working area.
Cost-Effective Expansion
In comparison to relocating to a larger facility or constructing an extension, the installation of a mezzanine floor is highly cost-effective. By making the most of your existing warehouse footprint, you avoid the significant expenses of buying or leasing additional space, not to mention the logistical challenges of moving your operations.
Boosting Productivity
A well-planned mezzanine floor can enhance operational efficiency by improving workflow and decreasing the time it takes to move products around the warehouse. For businesses with separate storage and production areas, a mezzanine floor can serve as a vital link between these sections, streamlining operations and reducing handling times.
Flexibility and Scalability
A crucial advantage of mezzanine floors is their adaptability. They can be installed in almost any building with sufficient height and are customisable to the precise needs of your operations. Furthermore, if your business needs change, the mezzanine can be altered, extended, or even relocated to match your evolving requirements.
Compliance with Regulations
Mezzanine floors are considered a non-permanent structure, which means they often do not require planning permission. However, UK regulations demand adherence to specific building, fire, and safety codes. Reputable suppliers will ensure your mezzanine floor design complies with all applicable regulations, including SEMA guidelines, and helps you navigate necessary approvals.
Quick Installation
The installation process of a mezzanine floor is typically faster than traditional construction projects, causing minimal disruption to your day-to-day operations. A professional installation team can ensure a seamless and efficient process, getting your expanded space operational in the shortest possible time.
Enhancing Your Business With Mezzanine Floors
In conclusion, mezzanine floors are a strategic solution to space management challenges, offering UK businesses a way to expand their operations, enhance workflow, and adapt to changing needs without incurring the high costs of relocation or construction. With their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and quick installation, mezzanine floors represent an ingenious solution for making the most of your warehouse space.

New 900m2 Mezzanine floor installed in Suffolk
2 March 2023One of our biggest floors to date! This mezzanine floor has been design to hold additional pallet storage. Having been asked to return to review the customer requirements we proposed a couple of layout options to which the customer made a decision on that best suited their flow of operation and fork truck movement. We project managed this and worked closely with the customer to ensure disruption was at a minimum, and despite the large footprint this installation was only 6 days.

10,000 pallet location racking project completed in Kings Lynn
2 March 2023Dexion Anglia Ltd were approached to review the customers new storage depot in Kings Lynn. Being very local we assisted quickly and provided 2 options on how best to maximise the space with a target of 10,000 locations. After many tweaks to suit the customer needs, a final CAD design was settled upon and costed. This project was made a little more complex with a very poor floor slab load. In which other suppliers had refused to quote. However having past experiences we thought outside the box and having known the pervious occupier; Dexion Anglia recommended a floor slab sample be carried out and tested. With this report, and the involvement of a structural engineer we designed & supplied load spread channels, that would safety be suitable for the loads being stored.
The order was granted to Dexion Anglia Ltd and 50% of materials were delivered in 4 weeks, with the remaining a further 4 weeks thereafter, meaning we could act quickly to ensure timescales were met.
We shall return in early 2023 to dismantle the customer existing racking for which is Phase Two.
The customer has also ordered around 12, 000 worth of storage equipment from our storage catalogue such as, Steps, barriers, Lockers, canteen furniture and Signage.

New Storage facility for King’s Lynn customer
3 May 2022We have a longstanding relationship with a local food manufacturing customer and were asked to advise on a potential replacement of their existing racking. The original racking had been installed by Dexion Anglia Ltd in 2005, but recently had quite a few bays taped off due to damage & there were signs of corrosion. There was also a H&S protocol brought in by the group that needed to be addressed.
We entered in to discussions about how we would look to replace all of the racking on site and, after some tweaks to the original design, we were awarded the contract.
Having a good understanding of the customers extremely busy operation, and need to continue working, we had quite a few meetings on site and agreed on a tight schedule to complete the works. We also had meetings with the customer and labour team to discuss a way to dismantle and rebuild an aisle at a time – drastically reducing the disruption to the customer.
There were a few changes to the original design in that, while most of the bays were 6000mm H x 900mm D x 2700mm c/e, there was a need within the Main Warehouse to have a double run of 14no bays at 700mm D to accommodate the Euro pallets they had on site. This allowed the customer to store approx. 250 euro pallets in a dedicated location. While the overall installation afforded them approx. 1,200 pallet locations.
The materials used in this installation was Link 51 APR. There were mesh decking panels to all levels, and rack protection throughout. There was also an element of hot dipped galvanised racking in the freezer and chiller area.
Our engineers were on site for a total of 4 weeks and, while there were a few snags, our contract co-ordinator worked closely with the labour team and the customer to achieve minimal downtime and stay on schedule.

This then went to manufacture and was delivery & installed with 6-8 weeks. The project consisted handrail, edge protection including kick board, Staircase with double landing and pallet gate for receiving pallets and goods. Fire rating was completed by the customer.

Ultimate Guide To Pallet Racking
29 July 2020Choosing and installing the right form of pallet racking is crucial. Selecting an unsuitable rack or getting it mounted incorrectly will adversely affect the profitability of your warehouse so it’s something that must be considered carefully. Here we direct you through 10 easy-to-follow steps to ensure that you get your pallet racking right from start to finish in our ultimate guide to pallet racking below.
Consider Your Pallets
The first thing you need to think about is your pallets. The items you store will decide the size of the pallets you’re going to use, and eventually the size of the racking you’re going to need. You should also know how many pallets you need to store your entire stock. Based on the type of stock you hold, you will need to determine if regular pallets or composite pallets are better suited.
The Warehouse Layout
The shape, size and height of your storage warehouse, as well as the location of the entry points, exit points and windows, will also need to be considered when choosing the type of racking to be used.
Workspace management specialists like Avanta UK will be able to carry out an in-depth study of the capabilities of your warehouse and provide you with ways to enhance the layout, functionality and operations of your warehouse to give you the most effective working atmosphere.
Choosing Your Racking & Storage Systems
Depending on the industry in which you work, you may need to determine which type of racking to use. Some of these include the following:
Wide Aisle Racking
Usually, the most common type of rack, wide aisle is simple to mount, flexible and relatively inexpensive. Through adjustable beams, this rack can handle changing warehouse configurations and business models and provides convenient access to forklift traffic.
Narrow Aisle Racking
This form of racking is suitable for retail, food & beverage, manufacturing and construction warehouses. These are usually built where floor space is restricted – by optimising the height at which the goods are stacked and stored.
Double Deep Racking
This rack does as it says on the tin; it provides twice the depth for storage, thereby reducing the number of aisles available. Double-depth requires a special lift fork with either an extension or a side fork configuration.
Drive-In Pallet Racking
Also known as the Pallet Shuttle, this is one of the most space-efficient racking models available on the market. Drive-in racking will increase the capacity by up to 80% over traditional rack by allowing pallets to be placed on guide rails in the centre of the rack on which forklift trucks will drive through.
Pallet Live Racking
Live racking systems operate on a first-in, first-out basis
and deliver an incredibly efficient degree of storage capacity.
In the case of live pallet racking, pallets are loaded onto rollers
which are placed at a set gradient to allow stock rotation and control.
Shuttle Racking
This is a deep lane storage and retrieval system, which has rechargeable batteries and is useful for managing whole pallets, processing in batch quantities and replenishing order pick-up tunnel systems. This method of racking is best used in cold stores and can work as the first in, the first out or the last out of the network.
You can take a look at our full selection of pallet racking by heading over to our Product Range.
Choosing The Most Suitable Lifting Trucks For Your Racking
Depending on the nature of your service, you may need to think about which vehicle is better suited to operate in accordance with your racking system(s). There are three types of widely used warehouse vehicles:
Counterbalance Forklift Truck
Typically used for unloading goods in and out of the warehouse. They are available in either battery, gas or diesel-powered to suit your exact needs.
Reach Truck
This vehicle is most widely used for loading and pick-up from standard rack types, e.g. Wide Aisle, Double Deep Racking.
Narrow Aisle Turret Truck
There’s a hint in the description. This machine is designed to work alongside a narrow aisle rack. Trucks that are very Narrow aisles are also an option.
Safety Considerations
To avoid accidents, you must show the appropriate safety and danger signs around your warehouse, particularly when it comes to loading and picking. For starters, emergency exits must be properly signed and free from obstructions.
Barrier rails should also be considered to reduce the effects of forklift collisions, walkway security barriers to protect passers-by and pallet rack protectors from preventing damage to the rack.
It is also critical that you clearly identify different areas such as walkways and loading bays with colour-coded line-markings.
If you would prefer for us to come out and install the racking systems or carry out a relocation – head over to Our Services page for more information on how we can assist you.
Which Aisle Orientations Is Best?
First, it is essential to remember that the exterior dimensions of your warehouse should be similar to 2:1. This will mean that you have the full versatility of the internal layout, that you have more room for building expansion, and that you have more options when it comes to aisle orientation.
The most popular (and reliable) forms of rack orientation are:
Fishbone
This principle consists of the central aisle being vertical to the length of the rack parallel to the length of the rack.
Hair Comb
The central aisle is parallel to the length of the racks, vertical to the length of the racks.
Whatever orientation you pick, be sure that the rack does not block any fire escapes. The use of professional workspace design consultants such as Dexion Anglia LTD would ensure that the design, arrangement and movement of products are introduced with health and safety remain at the forefront of your warehousing operations.

Top 3 Benefits Of Utilising Pallet Racking In Your Warehouse
29 July 2020Finding a solution that maximises your storage space is one of the most important things for your warehouse. Increasing the space available is essential if you want to increase your income and productivity.
The ideal storage system should be as simple, safe and highly efficient as possible. Until recently, warehouse owners used inefficient and costly methods to increase the space available.
Fortunately, in 2020 owners can increase their storage space without investing too much, thanks to the fantastic pallet rack systems. These systems have been designed to provide more warehouse space since they take up only limited floor space. The benefits of these systems are plenty, but let’s take a look at the top three benefits of using pallet racks in your warehouse.
Space Saving Benefits Of Pallet Racking
The most significant benefit of the pallet rack system is that it will maximise storage space because it doesn’t take too much room. By acquiring more vertical space, you would have a lot more floor space and more storage capacity. Increasing your storage capacity will contribute to increased business income, as you will have more space to store more goods in your warehouse. You can conveniently store and drop pallets by using a forklift. Pallet racking is the best option for saving space where heavy storage capacity is required.
Safety Benefits Of Pallet Racking
Another significant benefit of the pallet rack system is that it guarantees optimum protection for all workers in the warehouse. Made of high-quality materials, pallet racks offer a reliable storage solution. A pallet rack with the right size will accommodate different pallets in your warehouse. However, employees need to monitor all safety factors while working with pallet rack systems to minimise or prevent injuries. To improve protection and security, these storage structures can be mounted on the floor of the warehouse.
Convenience Of Utilising Pallet Racking In Your Warehouse
By providing vertical space, pallet rack is also a versatile storage device. It is effortless and secure to store and remove pallets with a forklift, and this improves the efficiency of your warehouse. Pallet racking systems are an ideal way to increase overall business performance.
What Are The Different Pallet Racking Systems You Can Utilise In Your Warehouse?
There are many different pallet racking options available depending on how much space you have available. There are wide aisle racking options and narrow aisle racking options as well as drive in and live storage racking systems.
Head over to our product range to find our full range of racking systems for all of your office and warehousing storage needs.
